POTOMAC HIGHLANDS TOUR 2005 Ride leader: Laurel Klein A five day self-contained inn to inn tour in one of the most scenic areas of WV. Starts and ends in Burlington, WV. Although this region is mountainous, most of our roads follow the valleys. Daily mileages will be shorter than previous fall tours in this area to allow plenty of time to see the sights, take pictures, sample the local cuisine, and maybe even have the energy to take a little hike. Day 1 - Seneca Rocks, 50 miles Day 2 - Monterey, VA, 50 miles Day 3 - Brandywine, WV, 36 miles (includes a big climb, outstanding scenery) Day 4 - Moorefield, 38 miles Day 5 - back to Burlington, 37 miles POTOMAC HIGHLANDS LODGINGS: Please call and make your reservations soon. Some of these little motels fill up with construction workers. All rates listed are before taxes are added. There do not seem to be any AAA or AARP discounts, but seniors get a break at Burlington and Monterey. You would not have to stay overnight at Burlington if you could be there, ready to ride by 8:30 Saturday morning. I have made all my own reservations. Saturday June 18 Yokum's Vacation Land Seneca Rocks 304-567-2351, Fax: 304-567-2642 There are two facilities 1/2 to ¾ mile apart, both in sight of the Rocks The older facility next to the restaurant and indoor pool, has no phones, no non-smoking rooms $40/45 The newer facility with more amenities is upstairs from the general store. $50/59 48 hour cancellation. My reservation is at the older place. Sunday June 19 Highland Inn, Main St, Monterey, VA 540-468-2143 http://www.highland-inn.com/ $69 & up includes continental breakfast 10% discount for seniors 55 & older 72 hr cancellation This is a wonderful old inn with a big front porch ** Less expensive: Montvallee Motel, Main St, Monterey, VA, 540-468-2500. It looks like the 1950's. Call for rates, could be as much as $20 less than the Inn. Monday June 20 Brandywine Motel (reservation desk is in Fox Pizza) 304- 249-5136, $34 for 2 persons, all rooms non-smoking 24 hr cancellation Yes, Fat Boy's Pork Palace is still open. Tuesday June 21 Evans Motel, 508 N Main St, Moorefield, WV 26836, 304-538-7771, $40 to 48 non smoking available. My reservation is here. Nicer, but pricier: McMechen House 304-530-1853 just 3 rooms left $79, 89 and 99 all with private baths , includes breakfast. |
