late August - early September 2003 RIDE SCHEDULERoad Captain Laurel Klein (info@hcba.us).Difficulty ratings: (*) easy; ( * * ) moderate; (* * *) difficult; (* * * *) extreme. These ratings are somewhat subjective. Ride leaders' initials follow the name of the ride. Friday July 4, 9:00 Deckers Creek, Paula Hunt & Tim Warner (* ½) ~25 miles. From Sabraton Plaza in Morgantown (park near trail near/between Wendy's and CVS pharmacy (Auto Zone, Rio Grande, Dollar General, etc. are in the Sabraton Plaza with CVS). Meet along the trail near the parking area. The trail has a good hard-packed surface suitable for road bikes or mountain bikes. It climbs steadily away from Morgantown to the Masontown parking area where we will turn around to ride back. It will be hot, so bring plenty of water. Snack break at Dave's Snack Shack along the trail. Lunch ??????? Saturday July 5, 9:30 Shavers Fork Loop, Laurel K About 44 miles (**) from the Allegheny Highlands Trailhead on US 219 just north of Elkins. Bring mountain bikes or hybrids. We will ride some paved road, but mostly gravel over to the very scenic bridge on the Shavers Fork and then continue up the gravel road along the river to Parsons, where we will have a restaurant lunch and then return on the rail trail, which is quite smooth. There are a couple of pretty good climbs, but the scenery should be outstanding and the pace easy enough to enjoy it. Sunday July 6, 9:00 Skeleton Run /Rock Camp, Gregg McW 25 miles (**) From school bus garage just off Rt 50 at Cherry Camp (Take Rt 50 west almost to Salem. Cherry Camp Rd will be on the right) A new route through pretty countryside, with one road that were paved for the first time last year. Mostly just rolling hills. Friday July 11 to Saturday July 19, New York Trip, Al D An 8 day tour starting and ending at Erie, PA, including Niagara Falls and many other points of interest. See previous newsletter or website for details. Saturday July 12, 9:00 Boothsville/Adaland, Marilyn N (***) 36 miles The Fire Dept is at the Bingo Hall on the right along 250 about 5 miles from the exit, not actually in Boothsville. Hilly out and back ride. Bring snacks and plenty of water, we aren’t sure about a store along the way. Adaland is a historic house on a hill, a nice place to rest and regroup. Sunday July 13, 9:00 Conaway Lake, Paul M (**) 52 miles From small parking lot in downtown Salem across from DQ. This takes part of our fall century route out to a country store where we can pick up some snacks and take them to the lakeside for a little picnic. One hill each way. Nice long valleys. Saturday July 19, 9:00 Time Trial & 10:00 Casual Ride, Bill F Jane Lew (exit 105 I-79) Park along dead end road in front of truck stop. Ten mile time trial is out and back Jesse Run Rd. (* ½) 15 to 20 mile casual ride to follow after time trial about 10:00. Sunday July 20, 9:00 Lost Creek- Watters Smith, Ken P 33 miles (**) From Riverbend Park, Clarksburg Familiar road. Flat to gently rolling out to Lost Creek. The road over to Wattersmith, repaved a year or two ago, has a hill. Lost Creek BP is a good place to stop for snacks. Saturday July 26, 10:00 West Fork Trail (Fairmont to Shinnston), Kelly W 30 (* ½) miles From Mary Lou Retton Park Park near statue. Nice downhill to the trail Flat rail trail with good surface for mountain bikes and hybrids. The trail goes along the West Fork River with a nice little park half way along and a Dairy Queen at the Shinnston end. Sunday July 27, 10:00 Stonecoal /Hodgesville Loop, Gregg McW 40 miles From Jane Lew off exit 105, I -79 A new route for us, this goes through Berlin, crosses Rt 33 near Stonecoal Lake, includes Linger Run, Hodgesville, a long downhill back toward Jane Lew. Saturday August 2, 10:00 Mountain bike Canaan Loop, Carol S (Leave message and Carol will return your call) 27 miles From Shop and Save in Davis. Canaan Loop is a packed dirt road along the Blackwater Canyon that travels through beautiful forests and crosses 3 shallow streams. No amenities so bring plenty of water and snacks. After ride meal at Sirianni's for great pizza, pasta and salads. Sunday August 3, 9:30 West Union/Meathouse Fork Loop, Walter H (**) 36 miles From the West Union football field (off Rt 50 at Rt 18) Ride will be south Rt. 18 to Meathouse Fork. Meathouse to Rt. 50. Short trip on Rt. 50 to Morgans Run. Follow old Rt. 50 back to West Union. No major climbs. Saturday August 9, 10:00 North Bend Rail Trail, Kelly W (1 ½*) 27 miles From Depot at Pennsboro. From Rt 50 West, take Rt 74 north into Pennsboro. Stay on it as it zigzags into town and up to the Depot. Flat rail trail with good mountain bike surface. Four tunnels each way to Cairo where there are a restaurant, an ice cream parlor, old time hardware store (see the high wheeler) and a bike shop. Sunday August 10, 8:00 Prosperity Century/ 9:30 Metric Century, Jack B 100 miles from the Mon County Courthouse in Morgantown at 8am or catch the group at the Kirby, PA exit of I-79 at 9:30 for the 60+ mile ride on through Waynesburg to the town of Prosperity where the you can get a sandwich at the store. Nice roads, lots of good riding. Saturday August 16, 9:00 Time trial & 10:00 Casual Ride, Bill F Jane Lew (exit 105 I-79) Park along dead end road in front of truck stop. Ten mile time trial is out and back Jesse Run Rd. (* ½) 15 to 20 mile casual ride to follow after time trial about 10:00. Sunday August 17, 4:00 pm Optional Ride, 5:30 pm Cookout, Mike B 291-0020 12 mile hilly loop ride from Mike & Betsy’s house. Map and directions to their house at: http://www.mapsbymike.com/Map2Mike&Betsy's. Please note: Limited parking, so car pool if you can. 5:30 Cookout: they will provide Brats, burgers and beer and hope you will bring a side dish. Please RSVP for the cook out to help us in having the right amount of food. Friday August 22 to Sunday August 24 Eastern Pennsylvania Weekend, Al & Fern D Al and Fern have scouted out some great rides near their new home at Mt Gretna PA with lots to see and do this weekend. Back roads through pretty Amish farm country, some rail trails, many points of interest, ice cream parlors, restaurants. See full description in this edition of the newsletter. Let Al & Fern know 10 days ahead if you are going. Saturday August 30, 9:30 West Fork Trail Glady to Durbin, Paula & Tim 598-8472 (* ½) 45 miles Meet at Alpine Inn at Alpena on Rt 33 east of Elkins From there we will drive another 10 miles to the trailhead. Reasonably good surface, trail is mostly flat with a gentle grade towards Durbin. Mountain bikes are best. Remote and scenic trail follows the West Fork of the Greenbrier River. Look for birds, wildlife, beaver dams. If the 45 miles is too much of a good thing, it can be shortened. Restaurant lunch in Durbin, see the newly restored depot. Bring plenty of water. Please call (598-8472) or e-mail to let the ride leader know you are going and if you want to carpool. Sunday August 31, 1:00 Jarvisville Loop, Jim W 23 miles (**) From Marshville exit Rt 50 West One of our favorite rides. Stop for snacks at the country store with the big shade tree before climbing the big hill Return through Salem. Short hop on the shoulder of Rt 50. Monday September 1 (Labor Day), 9:00 Stonewall Jackson Jubilee, Gary W 46 miles (**) From Marshville exit of Rt 50West. Low traffic route through pretty countryside with one big hill each way. Visit annual arts & crafts festival at Jacksons Mill. There’s food, music, history, etc. Admission charge (seniors ask for discount) Bring a bike lock. |
