MAY-JUNE 2003 RIDE SCHEDULERoad Captain Laurel Klein (info@hcba.us).Difficulty ratings: (*) easy; ( * * ) moderate; (* * *) difficult; (* * * *) extreme. These ratings are somewhat subjective. Ride leaders' initials follow the name of the ride. Saturday May 3, 11:00 Fairmont- Shinnston Rail Trail, Marilyn N. (*1/2) about 26-32 miles From Country Club Plaza in Fairmont. Flat rail trail with good surface for mountain bikes and hybrids. The trail goes along the West Fork River and should be pretty this time of year. There is a nice little park half way along and a Dairy Queen at the very end in Shinnston. Sunday May 4, 9:00 Appalachian Spring Spectacular (here is a flyer), Don D. (***) 45 or 60 miles 8:00 Registration & Continental breakfast at Wamsley Cycles in Seneca Center, Morgantown. This event, sponsored by the HCBA, was organized by our Morgantown members. All riders must register and wear a helmet. The fee of $8 for members and $10 for nonmembers covers insurance, snacks and pizza at the end of the ride. Limited SAG. Hilly rides loop through pretty countryside to Carmichaels, PA. Saturday May 10, 1:00 Route 23/Skelton Run/Indian Run, Gregg McW. 30 miles From school bus garage just off Rt 50 at Cherry Camp (Take Rt 50 west almost to Salem. Cherry Camp Rd will be on the right) A new route through pretty countryside. There must be some new pavement out there. Expect a few hills. Sunday May 11, 1:00 Deckers Creek/Kingwood Pike Loop, Mike B. 27 miles From Mountain View Elementary on the Greenbag Road Morgantown to Reedsville via the Kingwood Pike (hilly) and return down the rail trail. Dairy Queen at Reedsville. Saturday May 17, 10:00 Over Mt Davis, Jack B. 50 miles (****) From Sisters Restaurant in Confluence, PA 9:00 for breakfast. Ride at 10:00. Road ride over the highest spot in Pennsylvania to Meyersdale, PA. There is a fire tower at the top. Very hilly, but there are some fantastic downhills on the return trip. Lunch in Meyersdale. Call ride leader if weather is questionable. Bring enough snacks and plenty of water. High adventure. Sunday May 18, 1:30 Jarvisville Loop, Jim W. 23 miles (**) From Marshville exit of Rt 50 West. One of our favorite rides. A stop for snacks at the country store in Miletus before tackling the hill on Patterson Fork. Return through Salem. Saturday May 24, 10:30 Mon River Rail trail, Jeanette C. 20-25 miles (*1/2) from Campbell’s house. A steep descent to the trail, which has a good surface for road bikes Out and back ride, easy pace. Climb back up the hill at the end. Lunch to follow. Sunday May 25, 1:30 Brushy Fork From Deegan Lake, Jim W. Up to 30 miles (**) From Deegan Lake parking lot. Heading east into Bridgeport on Rt 50, turn right at the light past Hardees. When this road (Rt 58) bears right, continue straight on the lake road to the picnic shelter and tennis courts. Easy out and back ride with just a couple of hills each way. Monday May 26, 10:00 Time trial, 11:00 Casual ride, Bill F. Jane Lew (exit 105 I-79) Park along dead end road in front of truck stop. Ten mile time trial is out and back Jesse Run Rd. (*1/2) 15 to 20 mile casual ride to follow after time trial about 11:00. Saturday May 31, 9:00 Boothsville-Adaland, Marilyn N. (***) About 30 miles From Boothsville Fire Dept. From I-79 Take South Fairmont exit # 132 toward Grafton on Rt 250. The Fire Dept is at the Bingo Hall on the right along 250 about 5 miles from the exit, not actually in Boothsville. Hilly out and back ride. Bring snacks and plenty of water, as there are no stores along the way as far as we know. Adaland is a historic house on a hill, a nice place to rest and regroup. Sunday June 1, 10:00 Allegheny Highlands Trail, Confluence to Rockwood PA, Laurel 782-4117 (**) About 35 miles, more if you like. From Sister’s Restaurant in downtown Confluence. Come earlier if you want breakfast. This section of rail trail is one of the prettiest. Trail has a smooth surface but can be a little soft. All but the skinniest tires will do. There is a very gradual climb for a few miles. There is a store, maybe a restaurant for lunch in Rockwood Bring some snacks. Sunday June 8, 9:00 Clarksburg/Lost Creek/ Hodgesville, Paul M. 59 miles(***) From Riverbend , Clarksburg. Ride down to Lost Creek, Loop the loop with the big hill and return by the same route. Snacks or light lunch available in Jane Lew and Lost Creek. Saturday/Sunday June 14-15, Deep Creek Lake Weekend, Don C. Saturday we start 10:00 at the Panorama Motel, 921 Mosser Road, McHenry, MD. (just past Garrett Community College) 1-800-700-9257.or 301-387-5230 Rate: $55 and up. Each day a hilly ride of 40 miles ridden at an easy pace. Maps for longer options available for the more ambitious. Saturday evening we enjoy the food and entertainment opportunities around the lake. Sunday's start time to be decided by group. Sunday June 15, 11:00 Oxford-Leopold Loop, Gregg McW. 35 miles (***) From ballfield on Rt 18 just off Rt 50 west at West Union. Quiet roads with some hills. Very rural. A really nice ride. Bring plenty of water and snacks. Saturday June 21, 10:00 Time Trial, 11:00 Casual Ride, Bill F. Jane Lew (exit 105 I-79) Park along dead end road in front of truck stop. Sunday June 22, 10:00 Allegheny Highlands, Mike B. 44 miles (**) From trail head on Rt 219 just north of old Rt 33 in Elkins. This rail trail has 4 miles of asphalt at each end, good surface in between, OK for road bikes. Gradual climb over the hill each way. Wonderful scenery. A choice of restaurants for lunch in Parsons. Well worth the drive to Elkins. Saturday June 28, 10:00 Clarksburg to Lost Creek, Ken P. 33 miles (**) From Riverbend Park, Clarksburg. Easy ride to Lost Creek with a loop over to Wattersmith State Park and a big hill. Snacks available at Lost Creek. Sunday June 29, 9:00 Middlebourne Metric Century, Paul M. 60 to 64 miles (**) From Tarkiln exit of Rt 50 West . A couple of variations on this route are possible but there will be a couple of hills each way and some long valleys along the creeks. There is a restaurant and a store in Middlebourne. |
